Financial Controller (Montreal)

Reporting to senior management, the Financial Controller is responsible for all of the agency’s financial activities. They ensure the sound management of financial resources, compliance with accounting practices, and the production of reliable financial information to support strategic decision-making.

In a fast-paced advertising agency environment, the person in this role also plays a key part in optimizing financial processes and managing payroll.

Financial and Accounting Management

  • Oversee the full accounting cycle (bookkeeping, bank reconciliations, month-end entries)
  • Prepare monthly and annual financial statements
  • Develop and monitor budgets, forecasts, and financial analyses
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards (ASPE or IFRS, as applicable)
  • Manage cash flow and liquidity

Payroll and Benefits Management

  • Oversee or process full payroll (weekly or biweekly)
  • Ensure compliance with Québec and Canadian regulations (CNESST, QPIP, QPP, source deductions, etc.)
  • Manage employee benefits (group insurance, group RRSP)
  • Prepare tax slips (T4, RL-1)
  • Maintain up-to-date employee payroll records

Internal Controls and Compliance

  • Implement and improve internal controls
  • Ensure tax and regulatory compliance
  • Collaborate with external auditors and tax advisors

Strategic and Operational Support

  • Provide financial analyses to support management decisions
  • Contribute to optimizing the profitability of client projects
  • Work closely with production and account teams to monitor budgets
  • Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs)

Profile Sought

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
  • CPA designation (a strong asset)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting or financial control
  • Experience in an agency or service-based environment (an asset)
  • Proficiency with accounting and payroll software (e.g., Acomba, QuickBooks, Nethris, ADP)
  • Strong knowledge of Québec tax and labour laws
